After growing up reading his timeless young adult fiction, I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that Roald Dahl had an extensive catalog of short stories for grown up readers. Whether drawing from his experiences as part of the RAF in WWII, writing twisted and satirical tales about English society, or even creating dark modern fairy tales, Dahl brings his signature wit and imagination to a whole new level. At times profound and moving, other times just plain silly and fun, I am oh so happy to have more Dahl to enjoy, and to recommend to people. And if you have read them before, isn't it time to revisit?

This completed, never before published, novel was found among Bolano's papers after he died in 2003. Written in 1989, this haunting story describes one man's descent into madness while on vaction in a small resort town in Spain. As a huge Bolano fan, I was delighted by just how great this "lost" book is. A worthy addition to an already amazing canon of work!

Barry Hannah passed away unexpectedly in March of 2010, but he left behind an impressive canon of novels and short stories in his nearly 40 year career. "Long, Last, Happy" is a 'best of' collection of previously released short stories, and also includes 4 new unreleased short stories. His fiery prose rings of truth, honesty, humor and anger. A great introduction to the "second king of Mississippi literature".

My favorite author has just released a book of short stories, and as usual, it is not something you want to miss. If you are a fan of Daniel Woodrell, you won't need any coaxing. If not, this is a great introduction to the writer who has brought you "Tomato Red" and the highly acclaimed "Winter's Bone". Not for the faint of heart, like a mix of Cormac McCarthy, Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner (for lack of better comparisons), or maybe he is the Shakespeare of the Ozarks...I don't know. But as you can tell,I think he is pretty amazing! Check it out; run, don't walk!

I'm just a big kid, and I am super excited by this new book of previously unreleased poems by Shel Silverstein! On a slightly unrelated note, did you know Shel got his start as cartoonist for Playboy Magazine, and wrote 100's of songs, such as "A Boy Named Sue" (made famous by johnny Cash), and "Cover of the Rolling Stone" (Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show; one of my favorite bands of all time!). Can you tell I am a huge fan of Shel Silverstein?!

An ambitious, epic & sprawling novel in the tradition of classic seafaring literature, such as Moby Dick. Jensen's use of the first person plural sets it apart from being conventional, though. This book was immediately hailed as a classic in Europe, and widely considered the best novel to come out of Denmark in the past quarter century. It's a long one, but worth every page!

Quiet, subtle...like taking a sunday drive down memory lane, Per Petterson's laconic prose paints an absorbing picture that one can't help but stand back and admire. "Out Stealing Horses" is another novel of his that is a must read.

Multiple storylines intertwine in this character driven portrait of a small fictional town in the northwest.  The story switches from 1890 to 2006 randomly, so it seems, until you realize the connection all of these characters, families, events and themes hold to each other, although they are a century apart. Very well executed!

People who like Portis' "True Grit" or even HBO's show "Deadwood" will probably enjoy this western about two hitmen brothers. Funny, violent, and endearing. Narrator Eli Sisters has a big heart, a guilty conscience, and spins a yarn that is hard to put down.

This short novel is my very favorite work of Bolano's. Precise, brilliantly plotted and executed, "The Skating Rink" stands as a triumph of substance over excess. Read this before tackling "2666" or "The Savage Detectives".

This collection of short stories is a perfect introduction to the work of Bolano. I believe Bolano's true greatness stands in his short fiction, and this is arguably his best work. Read, enjoy, and savor!

I'm not even sure why I love this novel as much as I do. It has been called "post-modern" and "philosophical". I was left feeling that the main theme of this novel was the overwhelming force of technology in the WWI-era, and how life changed so quickly because of it (and how difficult that was to deal with). "C' leaves you wanting more, and offers no easy solutions for happiness (except, perhaps, death), but it is a novel of ideas, and it is at times as funny as it can be serious.

An absolute classic in the sociological study of subcultures , Buford blurs the line between journalist and participant when he starts covering a band of English soccer (football) "hooligans". File next to Hunter Thompson's "Hell's Angels" as examples of when investigative reporting crosses the line into real violence and serious consequences. Fascinating to read, though!

Hunter Thompson, before he became a cartoon character of himself, engaging in the kind of real "gonzo" journalism which made him famous. This, along with "Great Shark Hunt" and "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72", show why Thompson should still truly be regarded as a great journalist of his time, albeit one who was willing to put himself into the story with serious risks of danger.

I cannot recommend this book any higher. Set in the early 20th century English classical music scene, this novel will constantly surprise you with it's twists and turns. Narrated by a fictional British music critic, it is also chalk full of beautiful prose, and possibly some of the best music writing I have read in some time. Serious literature fans, do not miss this.

Those who have read Jim Thompson need no explanation as to his fierce and brutal greatness. The stories usually take place in Oklahoma or west Texas, and he captures the bleakness and dialect of the area like none other. This is crime fiction to be read with a shot of whiskey on the side.

Daniel Woodrell's Bayou Trilogy is to crime fiction in Louisiana what Jim Thompson is to crime fiction in Texas and Oklahoma. Woodrell's characters typically have questionable morals, are inclined to violence, rage and bouts of drinking--and that's just the good guys! Chock-full of unforgettable characters, scenes and authentic Louisiana dialogue; don't miss this early trilogy of works from the author who would later bring you Tomato Red and Winter's Bone.
