State by State reading with editor Sean Wilsey and writer Jed Lipinski

We’re hosting an event to celebrate the paperback release of State by State, a wonderful collection of essays from acclaimed writers, about the states they love.  We’re running a contest in the same spirit – called Neighborhood by Neighborhood. Write an essay about your favorite part of NYC: from Washington Heights to Vinegar Hill to, of course – Greenpoint. Send submissions to kelly@wordbrooklyn.com by November 12th to be entered. Winner gets an autographed copy of the book, a gift certificate to WORD and a chance to read their piece at the event. Sean and Jed will talk about the process of creating a collaborative book like this collection. (If you can’t attend the event you can still enter the contest!) Facebook RSVP here.

This talk will focus on the generation of memoir, using the author's recent book, The Adderall Diaries, as a jumping off point for discussing the process of figuring out your story and editing it into something someone would want to read. Admission is the price of the book ($23) and includes a copy.

This is Stephen Elliott's first memoir but his seventh book, all of them written from personal experience. We'll use this book as a jumping off point for more general ideas on writing memoir and some of the problems the memoir writer may encounter. In the talk we'll discuss dealing with family members and friends who may not want to be written about and we'll also go through some writing tips for accessing memories and experiences.

This event costs $23 which includes a copy of the book and 1 ticket to the event. To reserve your spot, purchase your book/ticket combo here.
