Jesi Bender\, poet and painter\, and author of her debut chapbook Glossolalia (MFG Imprint Press\, February 2010) Since graduating from Cornell University with a B.A. in English and a minor in Fine Art\, Bender has been living in Manhattan gaining experience by showing in numerous gallery exhibits and by being published in academic journals\, magazines and on websites. Glossolalia is a chapbook of poetry covering a wide array of topics but mainly dealing with a lack of God and sex... or faith and love --- depending on how you look at it.
Chad Faries was raised mostly in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan\, but lived in over 30 different houses around the country by the time he was eighteen. These experiences are chronicled in his currently unpublished memoir\, Some Houses\: A Faries’ Tale. His poetry collection\, The Border Will Be Soon\, was the winner of the Emergency Press open book competition in 2005. The Book of Knowledge\, a poetry collection whose design and contents were inspired by a 1911 children’s encyclopedia\, was just published by Vulgar Marsala Press. He has published poems\, essays\, photographs\, interviews\, and creative non-fiction in Exquisite Corpse\, Mudfish\, New American Writing\, Barrow Street\, The Hawaii Review\, Afterimage\, Post Road\, and others. He has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was a Fulbright Fellow in Budapest. Currently he is an Asst. Laurel Maury is a reviewer and critic
based in New York. She reviews graphic novels for NPR’s online column
“Books We Like\,” and writes regularly for The Los Angeles Times
Book Review. Laurel has had a life-long interest in Russian literature
and traveled to Russia as a child\, when it was still Soviet\, only to
revisit St. Petersburg as an adult. In her spare time she knits and
is currently working on a novel.
Alina
Simone is a singer based in Brooklyn. Her last album\, "\;Everyone Is
Crying Out To Me Beware"\; which covers the music of soviet punk-poet
Yanka Dyagileva\, was described as either "\;haunting"\; or "\;haunted"\; by
more than a dozen publications\, including The New Yorker\, Spin\, NPR and

Acclaimed author Luis Alberto Urrea and Brooklyn artist Christopher Cardinale meet up at WORD to discuss their recent collaboration\, Mr. Mendoza's Paintbrush\, a popular short story from Urrea's SIX KINDS OF SKY that is now a stunning graphic novel.
Luis will talk a little bit about the story and its inspiration and read briefly from the book. Christopher will talk about how the story became a graphic novel and show some slides of artwork.

If he is known at all\, it is probably as the principal songwriter and singer for Nuclear Power Pants. To date\, O'Brien has self-published a small handful of poetic tracts which he leaves around wherever\, and he curates the
monthly reading series WORMS in Baltimore\, Maryland\, where he lives with a man\, a woman\, and a dog.
Eric Paul is a writer and musician living in Providence\, RI. He
is the lead singer and lyricist for the bands Arab On Radar + Chinese
Stars. He has released 3 books on Heartworm Press\: I Offered Myself
As The Sea\, Love In The Monkey Cage\, and Pussy Pow Wow.
Eric never forgets to brush his teeth and comb his hair but always
seems to forget to take his medication.
Jillian Weise's books are The Amputee's Guide to Sex and Translating the Body (Soft Skull). Her poem “Incision” was broadcast on Poetry Everywhere (PBS). She was a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center before joining the faculty at Clemson University.
