Living in a time when it was scandalous even to show a bit of ankle, asmall number of courageous women covered their bodies in tattoos andtraveled the country, performing nearly nude on carnival stages. Thesegutsy women spun amazing stories for captive audiences about abductionsand forced tattooing at the hands of savages, but little has beenshared of their real lives. Though they spawned a culturalmovement--almost a quarter of Americans now have tattoos--these womenhave largely faded into history.

The first book of its kind, The Tattooed Lady uncovers the true stories behind these women, bringing them out of the sideshow realm and into their working class realities. Combining thorough research with more than a hundredhistorical photos, this social history explores tattoo origins, women's history, and circus lore. YA NOT? is a literary salon for not-so-young-adults (though all fans of teen fiction are encouraged to come, no matter what age) who love reading and discussion YA literature.

Our special guest will be Zane Lamprey, host of the cult TV hit Three Sheets and author of the brand new book: Three Sheets: Drinking Made Easy! 6 Continents, 15 Countries, 190 Drinks and 1 Mean Hangover!

Zane has a new book about drinking. The Diamond is a great place to drink. Come raise a glass with us to celebrate three years in business in Greenpoint. A perfect trifecta for a party! There will be celebratory toasts, laughs and general revelry. Oh, and a drink special too: $1 off draft and bottled beer from 6-8pm.

The bookstore will close at 6 PM. Head on down to The Diamond for the event: From 6:30-7:30 pm ONLY, Zane will join us to talk about his drinking adventures, answer a few questions and sign some books. Indie Press Night: Vulgar Marsala, Two-Handed Engine + more

A night of readings from authors with new indie press titles, featuring:

Jesi Bender, poet and painter, and author of her debut chapbook Glossolalia (MFG Imprint Press, February 2010) Since graduating from Cornell University with a B.A. in English and a minor in Fine Art, Bender has been living in Manhattan gaining experience by showing in numerous gallery exhibits and by being published in academic journals, magazines and on websites. Glossolalia is a chapbook of poetry covering a wide array of topics but mainly dealing with a lack of God and sex... or faith and love --- depending on how you look at it.

Chad Faries was raised mostly in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but lived in over 30 different houses around the country by the time he was eighteen. These experiences are chronicled in his currently unpublished memoir, Some Houses: A Faries’ Tale. His poetry collection, The Border Will Be Soon, was the winner of the Emergency Press open book competition in 2005. The Book of Knowledge, a poetry collection whose design and contents were inspired by a 1911 children’s encyclopedia, was just published by Vulgar Marsala Press. He has published poems, essays, photographs, interviews, and creative non-fiction in Exquisite Corpse, Mudfish, New American Writing, Barrow Street, The Hawaii Review, Afterimage, Post Road, and others. He has a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was a Fulbright Fellow in Budapest. Currently he is an Asst. Lisa A. Flowers is a freelance writer, vocalist and film critic. Raised in Los Angeles and Portland, OR, she is the founder and editor of Vulgar Marsala Press. Laurel Maury is a reviewer and critic
based in New York. She reviews graphic novels for NPR’s online column
“Books We Like,” and writes regularly for The Los Angeles Times
Book Review. Laurel has had a life-long interest in Russian literature
and traveled to Russia as a child, when it was still Soviet, only to
revisit St. Petersburg as an adult. In her spare time she knits and
is currently working on a novel.

Alina
Simone is a singer based in Brooklyn. Her last album, "Everyone Is
Crying Out To Me Beware" which covers the music of soviet punk-poet
Yanka Dyagileva, was described as either "haunting" or "haunted" by
more than a dozen publications, including The New Yorker, Spin, NPR and
Pitchfork. She is currently working on a book of autobiographical
essays about indie rock, Russia and her weird family to be published
next year by Faber.
