"I approach my work with humility and supplication, begging for that without which nothing budges, nothing moves: voice.” - Barry Hannah, winner of the PEN/Malamud Award for Short Fiction, the William Faulkner Prize, and the Award for Literature from the American Academy of Arts nd Letters.
In the process of becoming a writer, there is nothing more important than developing your own voice. In this workshop, we will work with a number of techniques that will help you to fine-tune your literary vocal chords. We will begin with a brief discussion of the different aspects and components of literary voice. Next, we'll look closely at exemplary passages from stories written by the “voiciest” of contemporary masters, including Junot Díaz, Lorrie Moore, George Saunders, Melanie Rae Thon, and Barry Hannah. We'll inhabit those voices, searching for what sets them apart. Finally, we'll use a guided writing exercise designed to help you bring the techniques you've learned forward into your own work. My goal for this workshop is for each of you to develop a clear sense of what makes your writing unique.
Participants should bring a notebook and pen to the workshop; all other materials will be provided.
Roy Kesey was born and raised in northern California, and currently lives with his wife and children in Peru.
