What is WORD?
WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn that will celebrate its third anniversary this March. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out.
Why is WORD in Greenpoint?
Because Greenpoint is the best neighborhood in New York.
When can I visit WORD?
WORD is open seven days a week.
Sunday: 12-8
Monday-Thursday: 11-8
Friday-Saturday: 11-9
Occasionally we close up a little early for an event or for a book club meeting. We're closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve (for inventory), and New Year's Day. You can shop for books 24 hours a day, 365 days a year online.
How do I get to WORD?
Located at 126 Franklin Street, we're closest to the Greenpoint Ave stop on the G. From the corner of Greenpoint and Manhattan, walk towards Milton Street (in the direction of the really big church). Make a right on Milton. After one block, you'll be at the corner of Milton and Franklin, and right next to us.
You can also walk to WORD from the L, if the weather is cooperative. From the Bedford Ave stop, walk up Bedford towards North 8th. You'll walk by McCarren Park. When Bedford runs into Manhattan Ave, make a left. Try to avoid being distracted by Peter Pan Donuts (on the lefthand side of the street between Norman and Meserole). At Milton, make a left, and we'll see you in one block.
Other information that might help you get to WORD: we're closest to the McGuinness Blvd exit on the BQE, and you can get within a few blocks of us on the B62, B43, B48, and B24.

Is the name of your store Word Books, Word Brooklyn, WORD BOOKSTORE, or Word?
Nope. It is WORD. One word, all caps. Thanks for checking!
Will WORD carry my book/have an event for my book?
Maybe. Email info at wordbrooklyn dot com and tell us why you think it's a good fit for the store.
How does WORD feel about surprises?
Good, as long as they are food, drink, or flowers.
How does WORD feel about ebooks?
We are big supporters of people reading and do not particularly care how they go about it. Whatever floats your boat! We like ebooks best when you buy them from us, though we are also into people getting them from the library. If any publishers are reading this, we implore them to get rid of DRM on their ebooks and spend more time proofreading them.
What if I want a book and WORD doesn't have it in stock?
That's okay. We order books all the time and can usually have what you want in 1-2 days. In fact, you don't even have to leave your house to see if we have a book in stock. Just search for it using the search tool in the upper right hand corner. You'll be able to see if it's currently in stock and if so, how many are here. Then, whether it's in stock or not, you can buy it but select "pick up in store," so there's no shipping charge, and you still get to see our smiling faces. So easy!
Is there somewhere I can get a drink or dinner while I'm in Greenpoint?
Hells yes. For a quick starter list, we recommend: Peter Pan Donuts (the best donuts in NYC). The Diamond (best beer selection). Lomzynianka (when in Little Poland). Coco 66 (drinks and food). The Pencil Factory (just a block away). Lulu's (free personal pizza with every beer). The Habitat (mac n' cheese happy hour). Amarin Cafe (good Thai food). Papacitos (good Mexican). Pretty much everywhere has a few good vegetarian options.
Is it totally awesome to work in a bookstore because you get to sit and read all day?
It is totally awesome to work in a bookstore, yes, but you absolutely do not get to sit and read all day.
Can I use a credit card at WORD?
Yes, but we will love you 2-5% more if you use cash.
Why should I visit WORD?
Because books are the repository of all that is good in this world, and we love them, and we love you.
