The best music writing isn't just writing about music: it can be a social history, a meditation on art, a discussion of race and class, or a gripping narrative. (Or some combination of the above.) This monthly book group will cover a wide variety of approaches to music writing, from histories of independent record labels to examinations of pop superstars to works that explore previously-obscure artists or scenes. The group, led by Tobias Carroll, meets the second Saturday of each month at 3pm. See below for the first several months of books to be discussed.
Tobias Carroll is a Brooklyn-based writer and editor. He is the managing editor of the literary website Vol.1 Brooklyn, and has written about music and books for Dusted, Capital New York, Yeti, eMusic, The L Magazine, The Rumpus, the Los Angeles Review of Books, and others.
